A Letter Addressed to All the Gods and Humans of Tibet: The Mirror That Distinguishes Virtues from Faults

This is all there is to say. It is the command of the king of the Śākyas, the supreme guide. It is the prophecy of the mantra-holder Padma Thötreng. It is the words of the Vidyādhara vagabond, the king of the wrathful ones Sangye Dorje.

This is a message specifically sent to all those who were born in Tibet, the land of snow, and are the disciples of the supreme noble Buddhas of the three families, and who regard the Three Jewels as their guru and belong to any of the various schools and factions of the Buddhist community.

Now we have reached a situation worse even than the degenerate age of conflict. Looking at the periphery and the center of the land of Tibet, [one sees that] from the outside, threats from humans and non-humans swirl like a whirlwind, while at the inside, the precious teachings of the Victor, the very foundation of benefit and happiness, along with the communities that uphold it, are very close to extinction.

Beings of high and low status are powerlessly caught in the swamp of suffering. This situation was not created by some outside agent, but

by people’s minds having become thick with afflictions and their constant and reckless engagement in the ten non-virtuous actions without any sense of regret. Therefore, all the excellent laws of spiritual and secular governance established by the former Bodhisattva kings and ministers have collapsed. When reflecting on the present day, it is clear that these laws have become nothing more than ancient legends. We must understand that this [situation] can be traced to those fundamental faults.
